I Need a New Camera

I have had a bit of a love affair with my red Olympus Stylus Tough 3000. It is a great little camera. It’s lightweight at under 4.5 ounces (essential for backpacking!), compact and takes great pictures. It’s waterproof up to 10 feet, shockproof to 5 feet, dustproof and otherwise backpacker-friendly.

So why do I need a new one? On a recent trip to DC (where I had an enjoyable stay at the Westin Alexandria), I lost it. It’s nowhere to be found–I’ve even called the hotel on the off chance it got left in the room and discovered by an altruistic cleaner. I’ve reconciled with the loss. So, I’m in the market for a replacement.

I’m seriously considering the Olympus Stylus Tough 810 and the less-expensive Olympus Stylus Tough 820 iHS. The 810 is cool with a built-in GPS, which sounds great for backpacking. However, I’m concerned with the shortened battery life that must come along with that. Both cameras seem to have good pictures for a point and shoot. The other concern that I have is that both of those cameras are about 3 ounces heavier than my 3000. Three ounces may not seem like a lot, but when you’re carrying it all for 10-15 miles a day for days on end that weight starts to matter.

Does anyone have any experiences with these (or similar) cameras? I’m in a pretty quick market as I’m heading out for a 10-day trip next week and would like to have the replacement camera with me when I go.

Thanks!
